No, - NOT just a pile of old stones. Just past the George Hotel is what remains of the Roman bridge over the River Tees, built some 1800 years ago. These massive blocks of stone, shaped and jointed, make you wonder how the Romans were able to cut and move these stones without the aid of modern machinery.
