The two principal attractions in Barnard Castle are the castle itself, and the Bowes Museum.
The castle dates back to before the 13th century and is now maintained by English Heritage.
The Bowes Museum was founded by John and Josephine Bowes-Lyon and contains a huge collection of works of art and antiques.
