Blast Beach as seen from the Southern end. At the beginning of the Nineteenth Century, slag waste from blast furnaces was dumped on the beach. Colliery waste from nearby Dawdon Colliery was then dumped on the beach in the twentieth Century. From 1990 onwards the beach has been cleaned.
