Explorer Map 305, - Bishop Auckland
This short walk is rewarding and would be especially so
when trees are in leaf.
The walk takes you into Bishop Auckland Cemetery, where there is a specially
curious monument near the Cemetery Chapel.
The walk returns you to the Market Place after a short walk beside the
River Gaunless.

Park in the main car park in Bishop Auckland (fee payable).
Walk towards the Market Place then past the entrance to the Bishop's Palace.
Head downhill on Durham Road.
The footpath to Coundon is entered by a set of steps on your left a couple
of hundred yards along the Durham Road.
The footpath runs beside the Bishop Auckland Golf Course for much of the
way.
At the end of the footpath, turn right onto the Auckland Way (railway
walkway).
Follow the walkway all the way to where it exits at a traffic roundabout.
Now take the footpath North towards Bishop Auckland.
After about 400 yards take the footpath on your left to take you downhill
to the Bishop Auckland Cemetery>
Cross the River Gaunless by the footbridge, then turn left and head uphill
to the Cemetery Chapel and the Cemetery entrance.
Outside the entrance, immediately turn right then right again to take
to footpath that runs past school grounds (King James Academy) on your
left.
This footpath takes you back to the Durham Road.
