Explorer Map No 307, Consett & Derwent Reservoir
This is a perfect walk for a Summer's day, - or pretty well any other
day, in fact.
The walk is linear, there-and-back, and there are no significant gradients.
Much of the walk is beside the River Wear, with the Bishop Auckland
- Stanhope railway line on one side.
In the winter, the River Wear can run at a high level and can damage
the river banks. In one section of this walk the damaged bank has been
bypassed with a new footpath, but further along there was a section
of footpath that was in danger of collapse into the river.
A map of the route followed
has been plotted on the Ordinance Survey mapping website, By selecting
the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances
and heights marked on the route.

Start from the Demesne Mill Picnic Area car park in Wolsingham
(NZ07580 37513).
Walk down to the River Wear at Wolsingham Bridge (near the railway station).
There are several ways of getting to the bridge, with one way by the streets
past the Catholic Church and St. Mary & St. Stephen's Church. Another
way is via the War Memorial and the main street.
From Wolsingham Bridge, take the footpath that heads almost due West beside
the railway line on one side and the River Wear on the other.
Continue past the bridge at the entrance to Kingfisher Holiday Park. Where
the road turns right to the Reception Lodge for the holiday park, walk
past Reception to take the footpath beside the River Wear.
Continue until you come to the road and a bridge which crosses the River
Wear.
Once over the bridge, as you meet the main road turn sharp left and there
is a (hidden) footpath to the right of an industrial building.
Now continue Westwards on minor roads and footpaths through Frosterley
to come to a lane just South of the Church.
