Outdoor Leisure Map OL27, - North Yorkshire Moors
(East)
No map is needed for this walk, though it is always useful to have
a map on hand to check on place names etc.
The walk is very easy, - simply following the Rail Trail from Grosmont
to Goathland, and back.
The Rail Trail is level for much of the way, with a firm surface.
There is a moderate incline between Beck Hole and Goathland itself.
Before the railway was re-routed to avoid this incline, a rope haulway
transported wagons up and down.
A map of the route followed
has been plotted on the Ordinance Survey mapping website, By selecting
the ink below you will be taken to this map, - complete with distances
and heights marked on the route.

Park at the pay-and-display car park that is found on the
left just before entering Grosmont (NZ826 053).
There is a pedestrian footbridge that takes you onto the platform of Grosmont
Station.
At the end of the platform, cross the railway lines using the level crossing.
On your right the start of the Rail Trail is clearly signposted.
Follow the Rail Trail uphill past St. Nicholas' Church. Then descend with
the loco sheds on your left, again on the clearly indicated Rail Trail.
Follow the main trail all the way to Goathland.
At the end of the Rail Trail in Goathland, turn left and take the footpath
down the Mill Green Way to Goathland Station.
Return the way you came, but as a slight variation take the footpath into
Beck Hole.
Turn left past the Birch hall Inn, cross the Eller Beck and continue up
the hill to the Quoits pitch.
Ahead is a footpath that returns you to the Rail Trail.
