The footpath to Preston-under-Scar crosses a wooded area, through which runs the remains of a stone duct that took the gases from the nearby lead smelting mill up to the moor tops, - some 3 km away. Legend has it that small boys were employed to clean the flue every now and again and collect any condensed lead.
