Park in the main car park in Bishop Auckland (fee payable)>
Walk to the Newton Cap Viaduct, then across the viaduct (pedestrian access
separated from road traffic)>
At the northern end of the viaduct there is an entrance to Kynren as well
as a small car park by the start of the Brandon-Bishop Auckland Railway
Walkway.
Follow the walkway to where a minor road crosses the walkway at Low Rough
Lea Farm (NZ 193 336).
Turn right and follow the track / footpath Eastwards to emerge at the
River Wear.
Here turn left and follow the footpath for a short distance to the Ian
Bell memorial tree.
Head Southwards along the River Wear to Furness Mill Farm.
Just past the farm, leave the Weardale Way footpath and take the footpath
that heads up a slope to reach the railway footpath once again.
Return directly to Bishop Auckland.
Alternative, at NZ201 319 there is a track that heads down towards the
River Wear. This connects to a riverside footpath that takes you to the
Newton Cap road bridge.
From there, return to Bishop Auckland via Bridge Street.
