Starting from the Bowes Museum (adequate parking at the rear of the Museum) the first leg is a wander along Mount Eff lane and then High Lane before returning to Barnard Castle itself.
In Barnard Castle a visit to the castle itself is an option.
From the castle the route descends to the Roman Way Picnic Site, then crosses the River Tees by the aqueduct,
The route continues on the South side of the River Tees before crossing over to the Demesnes.
From there a footpath is followed, initially beside the river, back to the Bowes Museum.

Start from the Bowes Museum, - car parking at the rear of the Museum.
Follow the footpath round the Museum grounds, past the war Memorial, to exit at the main entrance to the Museum.
Turn left and after a short distance take Mount Eff Lane past Mount Eff Farm.
Turn left to walk up Mount Eff Road (CARE : traffic) to Green Lane.
Return to Barnard Castle via Green Lane.
When you reach Barnard Castle, turn left and walk past the Community Hospital until you come to the main shopping car park.
From here, cross over the main street and head for the Castle.
Now take the footpath down the hill to the Roman Way Picnic Site, and continue to the aqueduct which crosses the River Tees.
Turn left and follow the road until you come to the footpath on your left, which, in turn, takes you to the footbridge over the river.
Turn right to the Demesnes, then follow the footpath beside the river until you come to a ruined farm building.
Here turn left and follow the footpath that takes you back up to the Bowes Museum.
