Explorer Map 308, - Durham and Sunderland
A walk that starts from the car park for the new Nature Reserve at
Easington Colliery. This car park and the Nature Reserve were once covered
by colliery buildings.
The walk basically covers the coastal path Northwards, before crossing
under the railway viaduct into Hawthorn Dene.
Continuing on the footpath to Beacon Hill and then onwards towards Hawthorn.
At Easington Lea Farm the walk continues into Easington Colliery and
the Cemetery, where the Easington Colliery Disaster Memorial is visited.
The walk then heads South through the memorial Avenue and returns to
the coast path and the start point.

Start from the car park for the Easington Colliery Nature
Reserve (NZ437 448).
Head Northwards along the "Easington Colliery Time Line" footpath
to the Pit Cage Memorial.
From the Pit Cage memorial head East to cross the railway tine by a bridge.
Immediately turn right to follow the track that brings you to the Coast
Path.
Now follow the Coast Path to Hawthorn Dene.
Now take the footpath through the Dene and up towards Beacon Hill.
From Beacon Hill head Westwards towards Hawthorn.
At Easington Lea Farm take the track,then road, Southwards to Easington
Colliery.
When you reach the cemetery there is a footpath heading South between
the cemetery and a row of houses.
After visiting the Easington Colliery Memorial in the cemetery, head Southwards
towards the Memorial Avenue.
Continue on the track Southwards of Memorial Avenue until you come to
a footpath on your left.
Take this footpath past a row of allotments. When you come to the road,
turn half right to cross the road and take the coast path that returns
you to your starting point.
