Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
Depending on the tide, this walk is either along the
beach between Saltburn and Marske, or the inland footpath which passes
through Hazel Grove. The return from Marske is whichever route wasn't
used on the way out.
The only matter which needs mentioning is that the footpath through
Hazel Grove is fairly steep and can be slippery in wet weather.
This footpath is prone to damage and may be closed for repairs.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the Esplanade on top of the cliffs above the pier in Saltburn
(NZ66517 21658). Plenty of parking available.
Take the steps down to the pier and promenade and head Westwards.
Walk along the beach until you are where there is an exit to Marske (under
Cliff House).
A short way up this exit point, there is a footpath which takes you to
the grassy area overlooking the beach.
Head to St. Germaine's Church, and take the footpath across the churchyard.
Turn left on the road and follow the road until you come to a footpath
on your left.
Follow the footpath and at its end turn sharp right. Continue until you
meet a road.
Follow the road for a short distance and turn right with the road until
you come to the railway line.
Here turn left and follow the bridleway to the head of Hazel Grove,
Return to Saltburn via Hazel Grove.
