Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
THis walk starts in the village of Middleton on Leven, and continues
to the Brewsdale valley.
After crossing the beck, the footpath heads West beside the River
leven to the A19 Leven Viaduct.
This footpath is VERY uneven in places, with steep ascents and descents
over uneven ground. When the River Leven is running high, the footpath
will almost certainly be unusable due to flooding.
Having crossed under the Leven Viaduct, the track is followed that
runs beside the A19 Although a crossing and a footpath to Hilton are
shown on the OS map this is NOT usable.
The return from Hilton to Middleton on Leven is made via a bridleway
that returns you to the Brewsdale valley.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the small play park in Middleton on Leven. (NZ465 099). There
is VERY limited space for parking in the village, so care must be taken.
Take the bridleway Northwards as it descends a valley. Keep straight ahead
at the bottom of the hill, and on your right is a small bridge and stile
that crosses a hedge.
After crossing this footbridge, turn left and head for the Brewsdale valley.
Cross the beck where there had once been a footbridge, then turn left.
Now follow the footpath beside the River Leven to eventually pass under
the A19 Leven Viaduct.
Continue on the track to the point where it turns right and up a hill.
Continue alongside the A19 until you come to the road that leads to Hilton.
In Hilton, take the bridleway that runs South to Brewsdale, and retrace
your steps to Middleton on Leven.
