Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
The first part of this walk is on a reasonably straightforward route
from Great Ayton to Newton under Roseberry. There is only a limited
amount of climbing on this leg, though there are a few stiles to cross.
The mid-point of the walk is the church at Newton under Roseberry.
From Newton under Roseberry the route takes you up into Newton Wood,
with a climb to the edge of the wood. The route then descends to the
edge of the wood, before climbing again to a point above Cliff Rigg
Quarry.
There is a steep descent from this point to where the footpath leaves
Cliff Ridge Wood for Great Ayton.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
The start of the walk is from the road beside the River
Leven in Great Ayton, where there is a small park (NZ555 106).
Walk East through Great Ayton until you come to Waterfall Park (NZ559
107).
Here take the footpath beside the waterfall and continue South Eastwards
with the cricket pitch on your right.
Then take the footpath towards Grange Farm and Little Ayton.
Continue in a North Easterly direction to cross the railway and onwards
to Dikes Lane.
Here cross the road and take the road towards Airyholme Farm.
About 1/2 mile up the road there is a footpath on your left which takes
you to Cliff Ridge Wood.
Continue North Westwards through the wood until you leave at a farm track.
Ahead is a stile that takes you to the footpath to Roseberry under Newton.
In the village, cross the road to find the lane leading to the church.
From Roseberry under Newton, head up Roseberry Lane to Newton Wood. When
you enter the wood, head Southwards up the track through the woods.
Continue along the edge of the wood before descending through the woods.
At NZ568 118 join the track that heads North East tai eventually bring
you to Cliff Rigg Quarry. From here descend (initially a very steep footpath)
to join a track that heads to Airyholme Farm.
However, shortly after joining the track, take the footpath on your right
to take you back down into Cliff Ridge Wood and then onwards to return
you to GReat Ayton.
