This walk starts from the picturesque village of Swainby,
and makes a circuit that take sin the villages of Faceby and Carlton
in Cleveland. The return leg passes the ruined Church of the Holy
Cross in Whorlton, and Whorlton Castle.
Choose a fine day and there are some superb views to be had.
The walking is mostly easy.
Navigation is very straightforward, with plenty of waymarkers and
finger posts to help.

There are several parking spaces by the public toilets in
Swainby (NZ47653 02159).
Head Southwards down the main street in Swainby. Continue ahead past the
turning to Scugdale.
At a bend in the road there is a signposted track which leads you to join
the Cleveland Way footpath in Clain Wood.
Turn left on the Cleveland Way footpath and follow the path to Hollin
Hill.
Turn left at the road junction and after a few yards turn right at Heathwaite
Green Farm Follow the track North to Perish Crokk Farm. Here tur left
and take the footpath / track to Whorlton House Farm.
Turn right and take the footpath to Bank Land, Faceby, and then head Northwards
towards Faceby.
Where the road turns right by the village pub (Mill Lane) follow this
road to Carlton.
In Carlton there is a small village Green at the end of this road, and
a footpath that takes you into the village itself. Follow the footpath
Northwards to St. Botolph's Church.
From the church, retrace your steps to where the footpath to Faceby is
clearly indicated by a finger post.
Follow this field footpath back to Faceby.
Turn left when the footpath meets the road, then take the next road on
your right which takes you to Whorl Hill Farm.
Just before the farm, and hand-written sign directs you to the track down
to Whorlton. This track has been severely eroded in places.
Once at the road at Whorlton, head past the church (though this is well
worth visiting) and Castle to arrive back in Swainby.
