Explorer Map 306, - Middlesbrough & Hartlepool
A very straightforward walk, following the Castle Eden
Walkway for much of the route, but also using clearly defined footpaths
and farm tracks.
There are no gradients and the surface walked on is firm for almost
the entire way.
This is a gentle walk for any time of the year
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
There is a small car park off the A689 (on the North side)
where the Castle Eden Walkway crosses the A689.
(NZ40483 28440).
From this car park, follow the signposted Castle Eden Walkway (a disused
railway track bed) South until you come to a sign post indicating a track
on the right to the Tilery Wood car park.
Follow this track fro about 1/4 mile, to take the track on your left that
is signposted to take you to the Thorpe Thewles Visitor Centre.
This track eventually rejoins the Castle Eden walkway heading South.
Continue on the track until another footpath sign on your left directs
you to the Grindon Loop.
The Grindon Loop is a farm track that takes you past Fulthorpe Farm to
Thorpe Wood.
Take the track through Thorpe Wood. Just past a pond there is a track
on your left which returns you to the Castle Eden Walkway.
Continue South to Thorpe Thewles station and Visitor Centre.
Return to your start point by heading North along the Castle Eden Walkway.
