Explorer Map 300, - Howardian Hills and Malton

A delightful walk, - easy to navigate and with no specially difficult sections. Some gentle ascents and descents only.
Great views to the South from Caulkleys Bank.
A visit to Stonegrave Minster is one of the highlights of the walk, and, of course, Nunnington itself is a charming village.
After heavy rain it is possible that the River Rye could be in flood. If so, you will have to postpone the walk until the river levels have returned to normal.

Cross the River Rye by the road bridge (CARE : traffic) and head up the hill to a point just past the Village Hall.
Here take the field footpath to Nunnington Mill and then onwards to Ness Bridge.
At Ness Bridge, turn right and follow the road past West Ness Hall Farm.
Just to the left of the road junction take the broad track of Caulkleys Lane.
Follow Caulkleys Lane to the farm track for Highfield House Farm. Just past this track, on your right, is the broad, grassy track that heads East-West along Caulkleys Bank.
Follow this track all the way until it descends to the B1257.
To visit Stonegrave Minster, cross the road and turn right into the churchyard.
From Stonegrave Minster, head Eastwards along the B1257 for a short distance, and when you come to Carr Lane turn right.
Follow Carr Lane (CARE : traffic) until at SE653 774, on your right, there is a footpath heading Northwards to take you back to the B1257.
Cross the B1257 and take the footpath, indicated by another finger post, until you reach the minor road that leads to Nunnington.
Turn left and after a short distance follow the track on your right that heads Northwards.
Just before Plump Wood, the footpath takes you back to Nunnington.
