Explorer Map 300, - Howardian Hills and Malton
This walk starts from the delightful village of Hovingham,
with the mid-point the equally delightful and historic village of
Slingsby.
Use is made of the Ebor Way and the Centenary Way footpaths between
Hovingham and Slingsby, with the return being made on the old railway
track bed between the two villages.
Although the walking is generally easy with some magnificent scenery
and views, there is one point w3here careful attention has to be paid
to the map.
Where the Centenary Way leaves the Ebor Way is quite difficult to
spot. This section of the footpath is basically unmarked and it is
VERY easy to go past it.

(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the village hall car park in Hovingham (SE66776
76559).
Walk South down the main street of Hovingham, and just at (or before)
the bend in the road cross over to find a footpath that takes you to the
road to Terrington.
(Great CARE needed in crossing the road at this point).
Walk a short distance along this road to find the track on your left which
is signposted "Ebor Way". Head South into the woodland.
Leave the Ebor Way after a short distance at SE66966 74019.
Here the Centenary Way leaves the Ebor Way (which is a broad track) via
a narrow muddy track between trees.
The Centenary Way then follows a generally broad and easily distinguishable
track through woodland on the crest of the ridge.
The footpath to Slingsby, which then becomes a track, leaves the Centenary
Way at SE69785 73205.
Walk ahead into the village (CARE crossing the B1257).
From the Village Green make your way to All Saints' Church (passing Slingsby
Castle on your left).
From the church take the lane beside the church heading North (Lawns Lane)
until you come to the disused railway track.
Here turn left and follow the track and waymarked footpath back to Hovingham.
