Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)

This walk starts from the popular picnic spot (and parking area) of Hob Hole, - a spot on the Kildale-Westerdale road where there is a crossing of the Baysdale Beck.
The outward leg of the walk is along a farm track, before descending into Baysdale. After a short walk in Baysdale itself, the route then ascends onto Great Hograh Moor.
There is a superb picnic spot where the path crosses the Great Hograh Beck.
The return to Hob Hole is by the track over Great Hograh Moor.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site, - just use QUO!!

Start from the parking area / picnic area at Hob Hole (NZ652 074).
Ascend the road up to where there is a farm track on your left.
Follow this farm track, past derelict farm buildings, until the footpath then descends into Baysdale.
In Baysdale, cross the beck and turn right. Follow the farm track to meet another farm track on your left.
This track ascends through woodland to Great Hograh Moor.
Immediately turn left after passing through the field gate to take the footpath up to the moor.
However, an easier option is to follow the farm track South Eastwards until it meets the shooters' track, then turn left to follow the shooters' track towards the Great Hograh Beck.
There is a footpath that descends directly to the beck, but this is particularly steep. You may prefer to follow the shooters' track Northwards past the point where there is a direct descent to the beck, then double back on a footpath to the beck.
From the bridge over the Great Hograh Beck, take the track over Great Hograh Moor until it meets a minor road.
Here turn left to join the road from Westerdale to Hob Hole.
