Explorer Map OL27 - North York Moors (Eastern Area)
A walk taking in the woodland of the Mulgrave Estate above Sandsend,
with the focal point of this section of the walk being the ruins of
Mulgrave Castle.
HOWEVER, - Mulgrave Woods are privately owned, and are only open on
Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Additionally, Mulgrave Woods are CLOSED for the whole
of May.
Therefore, make sure that you only do this walk on one of the OPEN
days.
Returning to Sandsend through the Mulgrave Estate woodland, the next
section of the walk is by road and footpath to the Raithwaite Estate.
Set in delightful woodland and landscaped grounds is a hotel which
clearly caters for privileged guests.
From Raithwaite, a footpath and then minor road takes one down to
the main Sandsend-Whitby road. THis is part of the Cleveland Way footpath.
Past the Golf Course, the footpath returns one to the beach for the
walk back to Sandsend.
If the tide is particularly high and the beach cannot be used, the
return would be by retracing steps to the Sandsend-Whitby Road and
then walking along this road to Sandsend.

Start from the car park at the bottom of Lythe Bank in Sandsend
(NZ 860 129). Charges apply.
Cross the road outside the car park, then head Westwards past the cottages
towards St. Anne's Church.
Not far past the church, and just past a rather distinctive house, there
is a short lane with a gate that shows as being the entrance to the Mulgrave
Woods.
(A notice on the gate advises that the woodland is only open on Saturday,
Sunday and Wednesday and is closed for the whole of May.)
Follow the footpath uphill along the boundary of the woodland. Ignore
a footpath on the left. Continue on the footpath until you come to a track
that leads to the new Mulgrave Castle.
Here turn left and follow the track downhill, ignoring any other tracks.
You eventually come to a tunnel. Pass through the tunnel, then turn right.
Follow this track until you see the castle ruins on your right and above
you.
Take the steps up the bank to the track which takes you to the castle
entrance.
Return along this particular track all the way to Sandsend.
In Sandsend, turn right and follow the main Sandsend-Whitby road for about
1/4 mile. Just past some public toilets there is a narrow road leading
uphill.
Head uphill (CARE : narrow road and traffic) until you come to Raven Hill
Farm.
Here turn left and follow the footpath to Raithwaite.
When you reach the Raithwaite Estate buildings, turn half right and follow
the road / track past the hotel towards the lake.
Just before the lake there is a signposted footpath on your left (indicated
"To Whitby").
Follow this footpath until you come to a minor road.
Here turn left (CARE : traffic) until you come to the Sandsend - Whitby
road.
Turn right and walk (along the pavement) for about 1/4 mile until you
come to a turning on your left.
Here head down the lane until you reach the beach.
Now return to Sandsend by walking along the beach.
If the tide is particularly high and the beach cannot be used, the return
would be by retracing steps to the Sandsend-Whitby Road and then walking
along this road to Sandsend.
