The Grey Panthers

This walk is a relatively gentle amble, that starts from the historic town of Richmond and uses easy to follow footpaths and tracks.
After a walk beside the River Swale, the first stop is the ruins of Easby Abbey and the adjacent Church of St. Agatha with its mediaeval frescoes.
From here a track takes you to The Station, where there is a cafe / restaurant and shops.
From the Station the footpath continues to Richmond Bridge and through Billy Bank Woods. The River Swale is crossed at Round Howe, and a track returns you to Richmond.

Start from the Nun's Close car park in Richmond, - fee payable. (NZ16788 01096).
Make your way to Richmond's Market Square via Finkle Street, and cross over past Trinity Church to the other side of the square. Head down Millgate and Riverside Road to the car park by Richmond Falls.
Here there is a footpath beside the River Swale that takes you towards the Mercury Bridge.
However, take the footpath up to the road. Cross the road (great care needed) and walk down the lane that is immediately ahead of you. At the end of the lane, turn right and then follow the pedestrian lane to the Drummer Boy's Stone.
Here you can either take the upper track, or the lower footpath which runs beside the River Swale. Both meet up again at the same point.
Continue along the track / footpath to Easby Abbey and St. Agatha's Church.
From the Abbey take the track that was once the railway track bed until you reach The Station.
From the Station, cross the main road (the A6316), - care needed. Head uphill and after about 200 yards the footpath to Richmond Bridge is indicated.
From Richmond Bridge, continue on the South bank of the River Swale through Billy Bank Woods.
At Round Howe, there is a pedestrian footbridge over the River Swale.
Once over the River, head left through the car park to find a footpath that takes you up to the A6108 Reeth Road. Cross the road and follow the lane for a short distance until you come to Green Lane.
At the end of Green Lane follow the road back into Richmond.
