Explorer Maps OLS26 & OLS27, - North York
Moors (Eastern & Western Areas)
A very pleasant walk mostly using country lanes, though
with some use of quiet roads.
The walk starts in Hutton-le-Hole which is a popular village with tourists,
on account of both being "quaint" and also on account of the
Ryedale Folk Museum.
From Hutton-le-Hole the route follows country lanes to Appleton-le-Moors.
From Appleton-le-Moors the route follows Hamey Lane and Howldale Lane
(quiet country roads) before the field footpath to Lastingham.
The main attraction in Lastingham is the 11th Century Church, though the
village has other interests worth seeing.
The return from Lastingham to Hutton-le-Hole follows firstly another quiet
country road, before the field footpath that brings you back to Hutton-le-Hole.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the North York Moors car park in Hutton-le-Hole
(SE70518 9022). Fee payable. Toilets.
Head Southwards through Hutton-le-Hole village. Where the housing ends,
there is a woodland track on your left.

is a right turn in the track. (Bottomfields Lane).
Continue until you come to Lingmoor Lane, and where this meets the Ings
Balk Track turn right.
Turn left at South Ings Lane and continue into Appleton-le-Moors.
In the village, turn left then right into Hamley Lane then left to follow
Howldale Lane to a point just past Hagg Wood.
Here there is a gate that opens on to a field footpath that brings you
to Lastingham.
In Lastingham, head Westwards towards St. Mary's Church.
Still on the road, head Westwards out of Lastingham.
Opposite Bainwood Head Farm there is a footpath that returns you to Hutton-le-Hole.
