Explorer Map 300, - Howardian Hills and Malton
The walk as described wasn't the intended walk. We had intended to
walk from Hovingham to Slingsby via the Ebor Way and then Centenary
Way. However, due to navigational errors in South Wood, South of Hovingham,
we took a Westward track though the woods. Leaving the woods, we then
followed farm tracks to the hamlet of Fryton.
From Fryton to Hovingham, the footpath mainly followed the route of
an old railway line.
However, the footpath crossed fields which at the time of walking
were extremely wet. In dry weather there would be no difficulty, but
following some heavy rain the footpath was totally flooded.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the village hall car park in Hovingham (SE66776
76559).
Walk South down the main street of Hovingham, and just at (or before)
the bend in the road cross over to find a footpath that takes you to the
road to Terrington.
(Great CARE needed in crossing the road at this point).
Walk a short distance along this road to find the track on your left which
is signposted "Ebor Way". Head South into the woodland.
Leave the Ebor Way after a short distance and follow the track Southwards
until it crosses a track that runs East - West through the woodland. Follow
this track until it exits the woods.
CAUTION, - where the track leaves the woods there is a locked 5-bar gate
which needs to be climbed over.
Head South down the Terrington Road, The road is quite busy, so for safety's
sake keep to the verges off the road.
When you reach the track leading to Airyholme Farm, turn left and follow
the rack to the farm.
Just before the farm, the track is diverted to pass North of the farm
buildings. Continue on the track Eastwards until you come to where the
Ebor Way now heads South.
At this point, the footpath continues by crossing a beck on the farm track.
Here turn left ND head Northwards up the farm track, and where you meet
another farm track head Eastwards at the top of a small gradient.
Continue East South East on a farm track until you meet the track heading
up to Fryton West Wood.
At the summit of this track take the lane to the hamlet of Fryton (crossing
the main road beforehand).
Continue through Fryton until you reach the Gatekeepers Cottage. Here
turn left and follow the route of the old railway line towards Hovingham.
Continue into Hovingham using the marked footpaths.
