Explorer Map OL30, - Yorkshire Dales (North)
This walk was described in the May 2019 issue of "Countryfile"
magazine.
The walk as described in the magazine starts from Muker and returns via
Gunnerside. However, we found it more convenient to start from Gunnerside.
The outward leg of the walk follows the field footpath from Gunnerside
to Ivelet Bridge then continues to Ramps Holme Bridge, just outside Muker.
This footbath runs beside the River Swale. From Ramps Holme Bridge there
is a footpath over the meadows to Muker.
The return leg is from Muker to Ramps Holme Bridge, then from here take
to road that runs above the Swale valley all the way back to Gunnerside.
This road affords some magnificent views of the Swale valley.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from Gunnerside, by the Village Hall (the 1877 Literary
Institute), - SD950 982. Space for parking about 15 cars.
Just past a small MIllennium garden, complete with three benches, take
the lane that heads West. Although this appears to lead into the garden
of a private house, it is, in fact, part of the footpath to Ivelet and
is waymarked as such.
Continue on the field footpath that heads West to Ivelet bridge. (At one
point the footpath appears to head down to the River Swale. Ignore this
and turn right to continue on the field footpath.)
When the footpath reaches Ivelet itself, turn left to head down the road
to Ivelet Bridge.
Continue past Ivelet Bridge on the clear field footpath beside the River
Swale in the direction of Muker.
As you approach Ramps Holme Farm the footpath veers away from the river,
crossing several fields via wicket gates.
Eventually the field footpath reaches Ramps Holme bridge. Cross the River
Swale using this bridge.
Once over the river, take the field footpath to Muker.
Return from Muker to Ramps Holme bridge. Having crossed the River Swale,
this time turn left, - initially on the footpath to Keld.
After about 100 yards, there is a stony track on your right, - heading
uphill.
This track soon becomes a minor road which can be followed all the way
back to Gunnerside.
At Gunnerside Lodge, there is a sharp left turn (initially down a bank).
