Outdoor Leisure Map OLS26, - North York Moors
(West Area)
You don't really need a map for this walk, though a map
is always handy.
The outward leg followed the minor road from Skinningrove to Boulby.
Although this is a minor road, care is obviously needed.
From Boulby, the Cleveland Way footpath is followed into Staithes.
The return uses the Cleveland Way Footpath up Boulby Head and down to
Hummersea Farm.
There are some reasonably steep ascents / descents on the Cleveland
Way footpath, made a bit tricky after wet weather when the path can
be quite slippery.
Otherwise, a delightful walk between two coastal villages.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
In Skinningrove there is parking at a spot overlooking the
Kilton Beck, where the beck flows into the sea (NZ71307 20113).
Follow the beck to where there is a road bridge over the beck, and cross
the beck at this bridge.
Now follow the road uphill to Skinningrove Farm. Past this farm, at the
road junction, turn right and then take the minor road on the left to
Spring House Farm, Upton Farm, and Boulby.
In Boulby, take the first turning on the left. This takes you to join
the Cleveland Way footpath. Follow the well signposted footpath into Cowbar
and Staithes.
Retrace your steps to the Cleveland Way footpath at Boulby, but this time
continue on the footpath up Boulby Head.
Follow the footpath all the way along the cliff tops until you come to
the track to Hummersea Farm.
Walk to Hummersea Farm and continue along Hummersea Lane to Deepdale Farm.
Here turn right and follow the Cleveland Street footpath back to Skinningrove.
