Outdoor Leisure Map OLS27, - North Yorkshire Moors (Eastern
Area)
The first part of this walk is easy to navigate, and although there
are some gradients involved shouldn't present any difficulties to
the average walker. On a fine day there are some superb views, especially
from Glaisdale Rigg itself.
From Glaisdale Rigg the route drops down into Great Fryup Dale by
a steep and slippery path, which in Summer-time is hidden under chest
high bracken.
It is possible to avoid this "direct" route by following
a farm track and minor road though this will add about 1/2 mile to
the overall route.
Once in Great Fryup Dale, you may continue via field footpath to Furnace
Farm or alternatively (especially under wet conditions) take the road
from Brook Side Farm to Furnace Farm.
The final leg of the route involves quite a number of stiles as you
follow the field footpath. One or two of these stiles are in poor
condition.

(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the car park by the school in Lealholm (NZ763
076).
FRom the car park take the farm track to Underpark Farm, then continue
on the signposted Esk Valley Walk.
Continue on the waymarked / signposted Esk Valley Walk to the ford over
the River Esk.
Take the steps before you reach the ford and continue on the road to the
hamlet of Thornythwaite.
The Esk Valley Walk continues on your left through the garden of a private
house. This footpath is indicated by an Esk Valley Walk finger post.
Continue on the footpath to Glaisdale Mill and inwards to Glaisdale itself.
In Glaisdale, turn right and then right again to walk up the High Street.
At the top of the High Street turn left into Glaisdale Hall Lane (by a
small village Green).
Continue along the road and then track in a South Westerly direction.
THis takes you onto Glaisdale Rigg itself.
Ignore the grassy track on your left, but bear slightly right to continue
on Glaisdale Rigg itself.
At the point where the track splits, take the right hand track which eventually
meets a minor road.
When you meet this road, take the footpath you will see indicated about
20 yards away on your right.
This footpath drops you down into Great Fryup Dale.
However, this section of the footpath is steep and slippery and in Summer-time
is hidden under chest high bracken.
It is possible to avoid this "direct" route by following a farm
track and minor road though this will add about 1/2 mile to the overall
route.
Once at the minor road in Great Fryup Dale, turn right and follow the
road until you come to Hollin Hall.
Here a track and then footpath takes you to Brook Side Farm.
There is a footpath between Brook Side Farm and Furnace Farm, but you
may also use the minor road.
At Furnace Farm, turn left along the road. After about 1/4 mile there
is a footpath on your right which crosses fields and the railway line
to bring you to a minor road.
Turn right at the minor road, and after about 1/4 mile take the field
footpath on your left that heads in an Easterly direction.
Past Park Wood this footpath meets a farm track that heads in a South
Easterly direction to Lealholm
The farm track exits at the railway station, where the you can cross the
tracks to enter the village of Lealholm.
