Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North Yorkshire Moors
(West)
This walk mostly uses well-used and popular tracks and
footpaths.
There is a fairly stiff climb up to the moors, followed by a steepish
descent down the Ingleby Incline.
Unfortunately, we found that the track leading up to the moors was VERY
severely eroded at its steepest section. This seems to have been caused
by a combination of use by 4-wheel drive vehicles, trail bikes, and
bad weather. Although the track has been closed for use by motor vehicles,
this hasn't stopped use by trail bikes, - and use by pedestrians is
compromised.
Another section of track leading to Ingleby Bank, is similarly affected.
There is no problem using the Cleveland Way itself, or the Ingleby Incline.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Park outside St. Andrew's Church, Ingleby Greenhow (NZ561
062).
Follow the minor road through Ingleby Greenhow to Battersby (this is reasonably
quiet, but you obviously still need to take care).
Where the road leaves Battersby at a sharp left-hand bend, a track is
found on your right. A sign says "Road Closed" and another says
"Unsuitable for Motor Vehicles". This is because some distance
up the track, where the track starts to climb up to the moors, severe
erosion has made the track totally unsuitable for vehicles.
Follow the track up to the moor.
At the top, you join the Cleveland Way where you turn right.
About 200 yards along there is a footpath that heads above Battersby Crags
to Ingleby Bank. However, this is a moorland footpath over rough ground
and heather. You may well find that it is better to simply continue along
the Cleveland Way until you come to the clear track that takes you to
Ingleby Bank.
From the top of Ingleby Bank there is a track that returns you in a Southerly
direction to the Cleveland Way.
Unfortunately, this track is also one that has been severely eroded by
a combination of weather, 4-wheel drive vehicles and trail bikes. On this
particular walk, we observed 2 4-wheel drive vehicles inching their way
along this track.
FRom the Cleveland Way there is a footpath that takes you to the head
of the Ingleby Incline.
Here, descend the Incline than continue along the track to Bank Foot.
From Bank Foot, there is a minor road that returns you to Ingleby Greenhow.
