Explorer Map 300 - Howardian Hills & Malton
A very pleasant and gentle walk, with no gradients or
difficulties. You barely need a map to help you find your way around,
as the walk is very straightforward.
The main attraction of this walk, of course, is the wonderful scenery
around Castle Howard and the village of Coneysthorpe. Choose a sunny
day and you will be well rewarded.
At the end of the walk, there is a tea shop in the Castle entrance and
you may well decide to enjoy a welcome cup of tea and a cake there.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Park in the Castle Howard car park (SE710 699). The car
park is at the entrance to the Castle and Gardens, and is reached by an
entrance immediately opposite The Obelisk. There is no charge for car
parking.
From the car park, head Northwards beside the road from The Obelisk.
Initially there is a very pleasant woodland path beside the road, but
after a while you have to walk beside the road itself. (CARE needed, as
the road can be busy).
When you reach the cross-roads, turn right and head for the village of
Coneysthorpe. Walk up the village street to the Chapel, before returning
to the road.
Head along the road, Eastwards, for about 200 yards. You then come to
a gate which opens onto signposted footpaths. Follow the clear and obvious
track to Bog Hall.
Pass through the buildings at the rear of Bog Hall, and continue on the
track to Low Gaterley Farm.
Past the farm, join the farm road that takes to you Castle Howard's Gate
House.
About half way along this farm road, is a track taking you to New River
Bridge. Visit the bridge then retrace your steps back to the farm road.
Once at the Gatehouse, there is a footpath through woodland that returns
you to the car park.
