Explorer Map OLS27, - North York Moors (Eastern
Area)
This walk provides an opportunity to walk through some
absolutely superb woodland, and at the same time to have a look at two
ancient castles.
HOWEVER, - Mulgrave Woods are privately owned, and are only
open on Wednesday, Saturday, and Sunday.
Additionally, Mulgrave Woods are CLOSED for the whole of May.
Therefore, make sure that you only do this walk on one of the OPEN days.
As the woods are privately owned, there are no way marks or footpath
signs. You need to follow a 1:25,000 OS map to be sure of where you
are as well as, if available, a satellite navigator.
The paths and tracks are generally very clear and easy to follow on
the South side of the Sandsend Beck (on the outward leg of this walk),
but can be slightly more confusing on the return leg (North of the Sandsend
Beck).
With these limitations in mind, if the weather is good you will have
a really enjoyable walk.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from Ugthorpe village, outside the Church of England
church (NZ79968 11135).
Follow the road East to Low Broom House Farm (the road is quiet, but obviously
needs care when walking along it).
At Low Broom House Farm the footpath has been diverted, along the road
for another 50 yards, then right through a gate. However, this diversion
is VERY easy to miss due to the poor state of the signs.
An alternative, used for this particular walk, was to continue along the
road until you come to a cross-roads then turn right.
Follow the farm track due East to Barnby Sleights Farm, then continue
on the footpath East into Mulgrave Woods.
Mulgrave Castle is due East along a clear track.
At the Castle, leave by the Western entrance and walk round the Castle
on its South side until you come to an information board. Now continue
Eastwards along the tracks in Mulgrave Woods until you come to Sandsend,
by the road bridge over the East Row Beck.
Stay to the North of the beck, and walk along the coast (pavement) to
the Sandsend Beck.
Now head West past the several cottages to cross the Sandsend Beck at
a footbridge just opposite a church.
Just past this point, on your right, you will find a footpath that leads
back into the Mulgrave Woods.
Where the footpath enters the woods, take care that you don't continue
Northwards but find a track that takes you Westwards.
From here, basically head West along tracks and footpaths towards the
ancient "Motte". Just before the Motte, the track through Mulgrave
Woods leaves the woods. At the field boundary, head West to pick up the
footpath down to the Motte.
From here there is a footpath that takes you back to Barnby Sleights Farm.
From this farm, you retrace your steps back to Ugthorpe.
