Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western
Area)
This is a linear walk, which means that you will have to
arrange transport between the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre and Helmsley.
If you can do this then the walk is very rewarding.
There are few gradients to cause any problems, and navigation is totally
straightforward.
At the mid-point of the walk you may stop off at Rievaulx Abbey.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the Sutton Bank Visitor Centre (SE51644 83122).
Cross over the road that runs Northwards beside the Visitor Centre and
take the footpath through the Hambleton Plantation towards Hambleton House.
Just before Hambleton Hose, take the footpath on your right (through a
gate) that is p0art of the Cleveland Way.
Follow this footpath, which opens on to a track, to the village of Cold
Kirby.
Walk down the main street of Cold Kirby. Where the street branches right
towards the Church, a finger post directs you on to the Cleveland Way
footpath.
Follow this footpath until it emerges at Low Field Lane.
Continue along Low Field Lane until it emerges in Flassendale. Here turn
left and follow the track into Oak Dale and continue past Ashberry Farm
to Rievaulx Bridge.
At the bridge, turn left and walk to Rievaulx Abbey.
From the Abbey, retrace your steps to the bridge then turn left and follow
the road to the point where the Cleveland Way leaves on the right.
Now simply follow the Cleveland Way footpath into Helmsley.
