Explorer Map 306 - Middlesbrough & Hartlepool

Apart from one section, this walk is very straightforward with no gradients of any difficulty and the navigation as per the map.
A large part of the walk is along Redcar's sea-front and the beach between Redcar and Marske. Should the tide be high for the beach walk, an alternative is along the grassy area overlooking the beach.
There are two crossings of a busy main road, - the A174 Parkway. These two crossings obviously need a bit of care.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO, you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site, - just use QUO!!

Start from the car park at Coatham (NZ592 293). A fee to pay, but plenty of space.
Walk along Redcar's Promenade in an Easterly direction.
At Mill Howle there is a track from the Promenade that takes you to the Redcar-Marske road. Cross this road and head almost due South, - first down a residential street and then down a lane.
The lane ends at a crossing of the Middlesbrough-Saltburn railway line.
After crossing the railway line, DO NOT follow the paved lane that leads to residential housing. This would appear to be the "obvious" way to go, but takes you Westwards, - completely the wrong direction.
Instead, make sure you head Southwards over a grassy field.
After crossing this field you reach a road. Cross this road (quite busy with traffic) to find a lane ahead of you.
The lane continues Southwards, but then turns sharp left.
At the junction with another lane, take this turning and head Southwards towards New Marske. This lane crosses the A174 Parkway and care is needed at this crossing.
Continue Southwards up a residential road in New Marske until you come to the entrance to Errington Woods.
Turn left once in the woodland, and follow the track to the exit from the woods.
At this point there is another track heading North-South. Turn left to return to a large roundabout on the A174 Parkway.
Once again cross the A174, then head Southwards down the A1085 to Marske. There is a pavement beside this road.
In Marske you may wish to visit St. Mark's Church (on the left at the roundabout).
Continue Southwards until you meet the coast, then follow the beach back to Redcar.
