Outdoor Leisure Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western
Area)
This walk poses no challenges, either in terms of gradients
or navigation. However, given the right conditions it is a perfectly rewarding
walk, providing some superb views and pleasant moorland and forestry walking.
There is one short stretch across agricultural land, where there are a
couple of stiles to cross.
The walk can be recommended when weather conditions might make walking
less attractive elsewhere.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above

(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the parking area at Newgate Bank (SE56438 89013).
Head back towards the main road then turn left along the broad track that
takes you across Rievaulx Moor to Helmsley Moor.
Follow this track for about 2 miles. When you come to the minor road that
heads South, follow this road to High Baxton's Farm (there is very little
traffic on this road).
At High Baxton's Farm turn left and follow the track towards Carlton Grange
Farm. Just before the farm, follow the field footpath that takes you to
the track from Carlton Grange Farm to the road.
When you reach the road, turn left and walk to Cowhouse Bank.
Here turn left onto the Forestry track.
There are several picnic benches in this area.
Continue along the Forestry track until you emerge again on Helmsley Moor.
Return to Newgate Bank along the track which you originally took.
