Outdoor Leisure Map OL27, - North York Moors (Eastern
Area)
Choose a day when the visibility is good and the sun is
out, and there are some incredible views to enjoy, - especially from Danby
Beacon itself.
There is a fairly steep climb up from Lealholm onto Lealholm Moor, and
another steep climb up Oakley Side.
Navigation is straightforward.
However, we found that the footpath from Oakley Walls back into Lealholm
was extremely muddy and slippery. In wet weather, or after wet weather,
you may find that rather than taken the footpath back to Lealholm it may
be easier to follow the minor road.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the small car park in Lealholm (near the village
school), - NZ76346 07628.
Head Northwards up the road out of Lealholm until you come to the road
junction at NZ765 082.
At this point take the footpath straight ahead of you and head towards
the shooters' track that crosses Lealholm Moor (where the footpath splits,
take the left path).
On the shooters' track, head Westwards until you come to Danby Beacon.
From the Beacon, take the road that heads South-Westwards. Where this
road bends left, take the footpath on your right that follows a field
wall. This footpath heads Westwards and downhill over rough ground until
it comes to a small beck.
Cross the beck by the footbridge, then head up the footpath that is waymarked
on the other side of the valley.
When you meet the "main" footpath, head South on the footpath
that takes you to near the Moors Centre.
From the Moors Centre, take the road that passes under the railway, and
continue along the road until you see a minor toad that passes under the
railway again. Head up this road, and at the top lake the track that takes
you up Oakley Side.
When you reach the minor road, turn right and continue until you come
to High Walls Farm.
Here take the farm track that leads to Hole-i'-th'-Ellers Farm, but at
NZ750 083 take the field footpath that takes you Eastwards back to Lealholm.
(Although the footpath is waymarked, it very much helps to use a map to
check the field patterns.)
