10.7 miles
Explorer Maps OLS26 & OLS27, - North York
Moors (Eastern & Western Areas)
This walk follows the Tabular Hills Walk between Hutton-le-Hole
and Cropton. The route is basically very straightforward, with clear
tracks that are well marked.
When in Cropton, the described route takes you to through Woodland Trust
woodland to the ancient Motte and Bailey remains. However, the walk
by be shortened by about 0.8 mile by heading to the village itself and
not visiting the Motte & Bailey or the church.
The return to Hutton-le-Hole is mostly along a minor road. Between Cropton
and Cropton Bridge the road can be relatively busy, but beyond Cropton
Bridge the road is much quieter. However, because the road is very narrow
in places, great care is needed.
By calling in to the churches at Appleton-le-Moor and Lastingham as
well as walking the route, this walk is especially rewarding.

Start from the North York Moors car park in Hutton-le-Hole
(SE70518 9022). Fee payable. Toilets.
Head Southwards through Hutton-le-Hole village. Where the housing ends,
there is a woodland track on your left.
Follow this track round the woodland, and continue Eastwards until there
is a right turn in the track. (Bottomfields Lane).
Continue until you come to Lingmoor Lane, and where this meets the Ings
Balk Track turn right.
Turn left at South Ings Lane and continue into Appleton-le-Moors.
In the village, turn left then right into Hamley Lane.
Continue Eastwards to Appleton Mill Farm.
Cross the River Seven by the footbridge, then follow Low Lane Northwards
to Cropton.
Where the lane meets the road, turn tight and head up the hill. Keep to
the footpath beside the road.
Where there is a sharp right-hand bend in the road, GREAT CARE is needed
in crossing the road to the other side.
On the opposite side of the road you will find a well marked track that
leads you to the ruins of the ancient Motte and Bailey. This is in the
care of the Woodland Trust, and there is an information board to tell
you about the ruins.
From the Motte and Bailey, head for Cropton's parish church, then head
down the main street to rejoin the road which took you into Cropton.
Now head down the hill, beside the road, to Cropton Bridge.
At Cropton Bridge, turn left and follow the road all the way to Lastingham.
Still on the road, head Westwards out of Lastingham.
Opposite Bainwood Head Farm there is a footpath that returns you to Hutton-le-Hole.
