Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western
Area)
This walk starts from the picturesque village of Swainby,
and makes a circuit that take sin the villages of Faceby and Carlton
in Cleveland. The return leg passes the ruined Church of the Holy Cross
in Whorlton, and Whorlton Castle.
Choose a fine day and there are some superb views to be had.
The walking is mostly easy, with a couple of ascents that require a
modest amount of effort.
Navigation is very straightforward, with plenty of waymarkers and finger
posts to help.

the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
There are several parking spaces by the public toilets in
Swainby (NZ47653 02159).
Head Southwards down the main street in Swainby until you come to the
street by the village school. Turn right here to find the field footpath
that heads Westwards. When you reach Back Lane, turn left. Continue along
Back Lone to where it heads uphill.
On your left is a footpath sign. Cross the stile and then cross the small
beck, before heading Southwards on the field footpath to Coalmire Lane.
Here turn right and continue uphill, using the footpath that runs beside
the road. Where this footpath rejoins the road, cross over and pass through
a gate to join the Cleveland Way footpath through Clain Wood.
Continue on the signposted Cleveland Way footpath to Hollin Hill Farm,
crossing the Scugdale Beck.
Continue on the Cleveland Way footpath, ascending under the woods of Round
Hill.
Where the Cleveland Way footpath turns sharp right (through a gate), instead
take the footpath of the left.
Follow the edge of the woodland and continue on the footpath to Bank Lane.
In Bank Lane head Northwards into Faceby village.
Where the road turns right by the village pub (Mill Lane) follow this
road to Carlton.
In Carlton there is a small village Green at the end of this road, and
as footpath that takes you into the village itself. Follow the footpath
Northwards to St. Botolph's Church.
From the church, retrace your steps to where the footpath to Faceby is
clearly indicated by a finger post.
Follow this field footpath back to Faceby.
Turn left when the footpath meets the road, then take the next road on
your right which takes you to Whorl Hill Farm.
Just before the farm, and hand-written sign directs you to the track down
to Whorlton. This track has been severely eroded in places.
Once at the road at Whorlton, head past the church (though this is well
worth visiting) and Castle to arrive back in Swainby.
