Explorer Map OL27, - North York Moors (East)
A walk that takes in sections of the Cleveland Way as
it follows the coast, together with some road walking and walking using
farm footpaths and farm tracks.
The only real gradient to worry about is the ascent up from Hob Holes
to the cliff top, not far from Runswick Bay.
Otherwise this is a really straightforward walk, with no navigational
problems.
On a clear day the views are stupendous.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from Runswick Bay cliff top car park (NZ80815 16101).
There is a charge for use of this car park, and there are toilets.
From the car park, take the signposted Cleveland Way footpath down into
the village.
After exploring the village, make for the beach and walk along the beach
in an Easterly direction to Hob Holes (NZ813 155). Here there is a gully,
leading to a set of steps which take you to the top of the cliff.
(If the tide is in and you cannot walk along the beach, the Cleveland
Way follows a footpath above the beach.)
Follow the well signposted Cleveland Way to Kettleness Farm and then onwards
to Telegraph Hill.
At Telegraph Hill (NZ850 145) take the signposted footpath South towards
Lythe (the Cleveland Way continues East towards Sandsend).
After about 100 yards, leave this footpath and take the farm track West
towards Goldsborough. Enter Goldsborough along the minor road which this
farm track leads you on to.
At the T-junction in Goldsborough, take the road South until you come
to the farm track at NZ832 143. Follow the track past Brockrigg Farm.
Just past the farm, take the footpath on your left at NZ823145 that takes
you to Barnby Tofts farm.
Here, follow the way marks to the footpath West to Westfields Farm.
Just before you reach Westfields Farm, cut down to the bridge over the
disused railway line. To the right of this bridge is a gate which takes
you down to the railway line.
Follow the railway line Westwards, then North Westwards, back to Runswick
Bay.
