Outdoor Leisure Map OLS27, - North York Moors (Eastern Area)

A walk which has a great deal of scenic interest, and which also passes by the North York Moors Railway (where trains pulled by steam locomotives are a great attraction).
Although the walk follows very easy tracks for much of the way, there are a couple of very steep climbs. However, these can be avoided if required (though the walk my be a bit longer as a result).
At Beck Hole the walk takes in Thomason Foss, - a waterfall at the end of a scenic valley. To reach this waterfall a steep climb up, followed by a steep climb down and some scrambling over rocks is required. And having reached the waterfall, you have to return along the same footpath with the same difficulties.
A further note of caution is that the rocks by Thomason Foss may be slippery after wet weather.
Navigation is very straightforward, though it helps to have a 1 : 25000 OS map to follow field boundaries on the return to Egton Bridge.

Start from the (free) car park at Egton Bridge Station (NZ80448 05343).
Leave the car park and turn right. Almost opposite the church is a lane which heads Eastwards. Follow this until you come to the road that runs to Grosmont.
Here turn right, and walk along the road into Grosmont.
Just over the level crossing, take the Rail Trail footpath towards Goathland (you can make a diversion to visit the Engine Sheds).
Just over a mile along the track, a footbridge crosses the Murk Esk. To the left of this footbridge is the footpath to Beck Hole (alternatively, continue along the Rail Trail to where a track to Beck Hole is indicated by a finger post).
Just before the bridge over the beck at Beck Hole, a footpath is indicated. This heads Eastwards up a valley in the direction of Thomason Foss. The footpath involves a steep climb up, and then down, before a scramble over rocks.
Once back in Beck Hole, cross the bridge and then follow the road all the way to Goathland.
This road climbs very steeply out of Beck Hole, and you need to take care with traffic using the road.
In Goathland, walk past the North Yorkshire Moors car park (toilets available), and turn right at the road.
After about 200 yards, turn right again (near the War Memorial) and follow the road that heads to Darnholm.
Where this road dips down steeply, the Rail Trail is found again on your left.
Follow the Rail Trail past Beck Incline Cottage, and after about half a mile you will find a footpath on your left that heads to Egton (as marked by a finger post).
Follow this footpath past Murk Esk Cottage, and continue steeply uphill until you reach the Goathland - Egton road.
Turn right and follow the road. Ignore the first footpath (a track) on your right), but turn right at the second footpath, - a short distance along.
Follow the field footpath to the road near High Burrows Farm.
Just before the farm follow the field footpath to Low Hollins Farm, and onwards to the minor road. Turn right, at at the T-junction take the footpath ahead that returns you to Egton Bridge.
