This walk in the Howardian Hills uses generally easy footpaths and farm tracks, with some superb views to be had.
The walk starts in Ampleforth, then takes in the ruins of Byland Abbey before returning to Ampleforth via the village of Coxwold.
The walk can also be started from Coxwold.
The footpath are well marked and there should be little difficulty with navigation.
The gradients, where they occur, .are fairly easy

Start from the parking area at Geldgate, at the start of Mill Lane in Ampleforth (SE58463 78263).
Head along Mill Lane. Just past Mill Farm a footpath Northwards is shown by a finger post. Follow this footpath as indicated by waymarks to reach the road out of Ampleforth.
Turn left and head up Jerry Carr Bank until you reach the footpath, shown by a finger post, that takes you over fields to Wass Grange Farm.
From here, continue South Westwards then Westwards, skirting Hessle Hill, to a point above Low Pasture House Farm.
Now follow the footpath Northwards to Byland Abbey.
Head Southwards on the road out of Byland Abbey to find the field footpath on your right, indicated by a finger post.
Follow this footpath Westwards to the point near Cams Head Farm where the footpath turns Southwards, then South Westwards.
Just before the road near Fox Folly Farm, the footpath heads Southwards to Coxwold.
This footpath is clearly shown by finger posts and waymarks.
In Coxwold, head Eastwards along the main street. Cross over at the cross-roads and continue Eastwards (crossing the dismantled railway line on a bridge).
On your left is a finger post directing you to the field footpath that takes you to the Colley Broach Road, - a farm track.
Follow the Colley Broach Road until just before Thorpe Hall a field footpath is indicated.
THis footpath takes you across a field to a small bridge over a stream at Thorpe Hall.
Follow the waymarks through the grounds of this property, and when you emerge at the road, turn right.
After a short distance, take the field footpath to Redcar House Farm, before returning Northwards to Ampleforth via field footpaths.
