Explorer Map 306, - Middlesbrough & Hartlepool
A very straightforward walk, following the Castle Eden
Walkway for much of the route, but also using clearly defined footpaths
and farm tracks.
There are no gradients and the surface walked on is firm for almost
the entire way.
This is a gentle walk for any time of the year, but highly enjoyable
nonetheless
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
There is a small car park off the A689 (on the North side)
where the Castle Eden Walkway crosses the A689.
(NZ40483 28440).
From this car park, follow the signposted Castle Eden Walkway (a disused
railway track bed) North for 2.7 miles.
On your left is a track that leads to the track from Murton Blue house
Farm to the Hurworth Burn Road. Follow these tracks to reach the Hurworth
Burn Road, then turn left.
Walk along the road for a short distance (But CARE, - TRAFFIC) until you
come to a gated lane on your right.
Follow this lane to the point where you turn right to cross a footbridge
over the reservoir.
On the other side of the footbridge, follow the lane to the right, then
back up to the Castle Eden Walkway.
Now head South along the walkway. After about 3 miles you come to a farm
track at Green Lane Cottages.
Here turn left for Embleton.
Opposite Embleton Farm, take the farm track Southwards to return to the
car park by the A169.
