Explorer Map 300, - Howardian Hills and Malton
This walk utilises sections of the Centenary Way and Ebor Way, as
well as assorted farm footpaths and tracks.
Although navigation is reasonably straightforward, we found that the
quality of waymarks and signs was somewhat variable, so that there
are sections where it is essential to have the use of a 1 : 25000
OS map.
There are a couple of gradients which require some effort, but nothing
out of the ordinary.
The only things which DID require some agility were a couple of stiles
which were VERY substandard.
The walk is through some superb agricultural land, with some wonderful
views.
The church in Sheriff Hutton is especially worth visiting.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the village green in Terrington at the West end
of the main street in the village (SE669 706).
Walk Eastwards down the main street of the village and turn right into
Mowthorpe Lane.
Follow the lane all the way to Low Mowthorpe Farm.
Before the farm buildings turn right along the clearly marked footpath,
then follow the waymarks to take the Centenary Way footpath to High Stittenham.
Here, continue along the Centenary Way towards Sheriff Hutton.
When you reach the main road, turn right and after a few yards turn left
along the Ebor Way footpath to Sheriff Hutton.
After visiting the church and castle in Sheriff Hutton, continue along
the main street in a Weserly direction to follow the Foss Walk footpath
to Mill Hill Farm. Continue towards Cornborough Manor, but when you reach
the farm road by the electricity sub-station turn right to reach the main
road.
Here turn left and after about 200 yards take the footpath that is reached
through a gate in the hedge.
Follow this footpath to Whenby Lodge Farm and continue until you reach
the minor road.
Here turn left and after about 20 yards take the farm track to Witherholme
Hall.
Turn right before Witherholme Hall to take the track to Dalby Carr Farm,
then head Eastwards along the footpath to North Ings Farm.
Here turn left and walk along the road (Terrington South Bank, - CARE,
traffic) until you come to the track on your right that leads to Prospect
House Fram.
Follow the footpath waymarks round this property, then take the lane that
leads you back to Terrington.
