Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
A linear walk which takes in the section of the Cleveland Way footpath
between Sutton Bank and Osmotherley.
Best to choose a day with high visibility, as there some exceptional
views to be had. However, even on a day with poor visibility the walk
remains enjoyable.
The route is easy to follow and the footpaths are generally well maintained.
There is a modest descent from Square Corner to Oak Dale, which can
be slippery in wet weather.
Another section of footpath at Whitehouse farm is extremely slipper
in wet weather.
Apart from these two highlighted difficulties, the route presents
no other problems with respect to navigation or ascents/descents.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the Sutton Bank North York Moors Visitor Centre
(SE516 830). Charge for the car park.
Leave the Visitor Centre and head Westwards towards Sutton Bank itself.
A well made footpath follows the edge of Sutton Brow, heading Northwards.
Follow this footpath for the next 3.5 miles, past White Mare Crag, Boltby
Scar, and High Barn until you come to the minor road on Sneck Yate Bank.
Turn right, and walk uphill along this road for a couple of hundred yards
to come to the Sneck Yate car park on your left.
Here take the Hambleton Road track to Steeple Cross (a small stone seen
on your right).
Continue along the broad Hambleton Street Track across Arden Moor, until
you come to a sharp left turn in the track. (Another track lies straight
ahead, but this must be ignored as it is only a shooters' track.)
The Hambleton Street Track now descends to the road at Square Corner.
(A car park).
On your left is a finger post directing you to Oak Dale.
Descend the fairly steep track to the reservoir at Oak dale, and continue
along the track to emerge at a minor road.
Turn left and after about 50 yards turn right down the lane.
After about 200 yards, take the track initially towards Whitehouse Farm.
On your right, before you reach the farm, the Cleveland Way footpath descends
into a valley. This can be a fairly steep and slippery descent.
Ahead is a footbridge over a small beck. After crossing the footbridge,
climb up the bank (steps provided) to take the footpath into Osmotherley.
