Explorer Map 302, - Northallerton and Thirsk
This walk takes in the section of the Swale Way between Scorton and
Great Langton, as well as a small section of the Coast-to-Coast long
distance footpath.
The route uses a mix of field footpaths, country lanes, minor roads,
and a short setcion walking beside a busy main road. There are no
gradients and navigation is relatively straightforward, apart from
the section between Scorton and Bolton-on-Swale where quarrying activities
have changed the footpath.
In wet weather, the field footpaths may be especially wet, especially
the setcion that follows the Bolton Beck. Here there was clear evidence
of previous flooding.
The footpath between Ladybank House Farm and Stanhowe Cottages had
been used by horse riders, and was considerably churned up.
However, this is an enjoyable country walk, with some excellent scenery.
The church at Bolton-on-Swale is well worth spending some time visiting.

- just use QUO!!
Start from Scorton's village green. (NZ250 002). Consideration
must be shown in parking, as there is limited space for parking on the
green.
Take the footpath that initially passes between houses, then crosses a
field in the direction of quarrying activity.
Do not take the footpath that runs along the quarry edge, but take to
signed footpath that leads to the B6271 main road.
Cross the road and take the footpath that runs beside the road (beside
a hedge) towards Flat Lane.
Follow the lane to Bolton-on-Swale.
Take the road past the church (though call in to visit the church). Just
past the church is the signposted Coast-to-Coast footpath beside the Bolton
Beck. Follow this to Ellerton Hill.
At Ellerton Hill, take the footpath to the B6271 and walk on the verge
beside this road, past Kiplin Hall.
Where there is a sharp right hand bend in the road, cross to take the
farm lane to Ladybank House Farm. Continue on the bridleway to Stanhowe
Cottages.
Just past the ruins of these cottages, take the field footpath South to
Great Langton.
In Great Langton, the field footpath enters the village by crossing the
lawn and garden of a property. There is a small "green" with
two benches beside the B6271 in the village which makes for a good rest
stop.
From Great Langton, retrace your steps back to Stanhowe Cottages.
Past the cottages, turn right on the field footpath to Stanhowe Farm.
Past the farm continue on the road to Whitwell Moor and Ellerton Gate.
Take the bridleway at Ellerton Gate to Bolton Moors.
Here turn left on the minor road for a few yards, then take the farm track
to Feather Hill Farm.
At the farm, turn left through the farmyard to take the track, and then
footpath, back to Scorton.
