Pickering Castle was first constructed in about 1070, and in its centre is a raised motte (artificial mound) which still dominates the remains. This view is from the top of the motte towards the town of Pickering. Just visible above the entrance hut is a wisp of smoke from an engine on the North York Moors Railway that runs beneath the castle.
