Explorer Map OL31, - North Pennines (Teesdale and Weardale)
Choose a sunny day with good visibility and you will have some of
the finest views in the country.
The walk uses well defined paths, mostly in use on the Teesdale Way.
Where the footpath descends to the River Tees (on the outward leg)
there are some fairly steep ascents / descents where small becks flow
into the Tees. On at least one of these crossings, use has to be made
of the stones over which the becks flow. This section needs a bit
of care.
As the footpath runs beside the River Tees, in wet weather or when
the river is running high there may be difficulties.
Otherwise, the route is very straightforward and offers some spectacular
views.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from Middleton-in-Teesdale (car park by the Bainbridge
fountain, NY94763 25391).
Head Eastwards down the main street in MIddleton-in-Teesdale to where
the road bends sharp left. Walk down Leekworth Gardens to the end of the
street, where you will find a field footpath waymarked and heading almost
due East.
Follow this footpath until it drops down beside a small beck that flows
into the River Tees. Cross the beck by the plank footbridge, then continue
Eastwards on the footpath beside the River Tees. There are further ascents
/ descents on this path in order to cross small becks.
Eventually the footpath emerges at some pleasant meadowland that is situated
beside the River Tees.
Take the track up the bank to the B6282 road, and cross the road.
Continue North Eastwards along the minor road, with the Beech woods on
your right.
When you reach the old saddle house (marked by an information board),
take the track on your right down to the Eggleston Burn. Cross the burn
by the footbridge, and continue up the track to the minor road by the
caravan park entrance.
Here take the track that follows the Teesdale Way South Eastwards to the
village of Eggleston.
Head Southwards down the main street in Eggleston to meet the B6282 again
(about half way down the main street, there is side street which you may
prefer to take, instead).
Now head along the road past Eggleston Hall to cross the River Tees at
Eggleston Bridge (CARE : traffic).
Having crossed the bridge, take the field footpath on your left that takes
you to Romaldkirk.
In Romaldkirk head Westwards past the Rose and Crown hotel, cross the
main road (B6277) and head along the minor road Westwards past the old
railway station.
On your right is the Tees Railway Walk. Follow this all the way back to
Middleton-in-Teesdale.
