9.91 miles
Explorer Map 26, - Nidderdale
Although the mileage actually walked was as above, this is at least
1 mile more than the path as mapped.
One of the reasons for the extra mileage walked is because the footpaths
on Brimham Moor are surprisingly deceptive, and unless you pay attention
to compass directions you can be putting in that extra mileage!
The actual roue is quite straightforward, and especially when near
Brimham Rocks or using the Nidderdale Way there are plenty of waymarks
and finger posts.
There are no particularly steep ascents or decsents.
On a sunny day, the scenery is superb, and the walk beside the River
Ure is particularly attractive.
Brimham Rocks, of course, are worth a visit in their own right.

Some new mapping software is now available which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers web site,
- just use QUO!!
Start from car park for Brimham Rocks (SE 20800 64769).
This a National Trust car park and a fee is payable unless you are a National
Trust member.
Head Southwards from the car park, and where you meet a farm track head
Northwards along this track. Where the track ends at a farm building,
take the waymarked footpath through a gate beside the farm. This lkeads
you into woodland, where the path is clear and easy to follow.
When you reach a footbridge over the Fell Beck, cross over the bridge
but keep to the footpath beside the beck. Initially this is quite rocky,
and a bit of care is needed. But it soon opens out into an easy track
that takes you to the road at Smelthouses.
Turn left on the road and after crossing the Fell Beck on the road bridge,
take the track and footpath on your right that takes you to the River
Nidd.
Now follow the riverside footpath to Glasshouses.
Once in the village, head uphill and cross the B6165 Pateley Bridge Road.
Continue on the road, uphill, until where the road ends there is a finger
post that points you onto the Nidderdale Way.
Follow the Nidderdalke Way footpath until you come to a valley where the
footpath continues ahead through woodland and crossing the Fell Beck by
a footbridge.
After a short while take a footpath Northwards to Knoxstone Craggs and
onwards to Collar Stoop Farm.
From here there is a footpath South that takes you to BRimham Moor and
BRimham Rocks.
