Explorer Map No OL27, - North York Moors (Eastern
Area)
The outward leg of this walk is very straightforward, - providing that
the tide isn't high and covering the beach. Check before starting out
as to the tiide.
The walk then takes in the tourist hot-spots of Whitby, - the harbour
front, Church Street, and St. Mary's Church, before heading out along
the cliff top to Salrwick Nab.
Once back in Whitby, an inland footpath was tried out. Initially this
just followed streets before entering a small park.
After that point, the footpath became EXTREMELY difficult as it was
heavily over-grown in places. This was in high Suumer, but it is possible
that in winter-time there wouldn't be any difficulty.
We eventually cut the walk and returned to Sandsend via the road, -
but even this wasn't much fun as the country lane was virtually only
wide enough for a single car, - making it quite hazardous to walk down.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the car park in Sandsend that is at the foot
of Lythe Bank. NZ86047 12917.
From here, walk along the coast to Whitby. From Whitby's promenade, ascend
to the West Cliff then drop down to the harbour front by the bandstand.
Walk to the Swing Bridge and cross over to the Eastern part of Whitby.
Walk along Church Street to the 199 Steps, and climb up to St. Mary's
Church.
Head along the road past the church, and BEFORE you come to the farm take
the waymarked Cleveland Way footpath. A few years ago this used to be
after the farm, and although that path hasn't been closed it isn't shown
by waymarks.
Walk along the cliff top path to the caravan park, then through the caravan
park to Saltwick Nab.
Continue along the road out of the caravan park until you meet a footpath
on your right.
Follow this footpath to the minor road, then turn left.
After a couple of hundred yards, there is a footpath on your right that
takes to back to Whitby.
Past the St. Hilda's Business centre, take the steep set of steps down
to the Harbour front in Whitby.
Cr oss the Swing Bridge then head uphill Eastwards along the street.
At the roundabout at the top of the hill, walk along the road that is
ahead of you, - NOT the main A174 road.
Not far along this road on the left is an entrance to a small park. Head
up to the charmingly named Harrowing Drive.
Turn right along Byland Road, and follow this until it bends left. At
this point there is a public footpath that cuts across to the B1460. Turn
right and when you come to Westbourne Road turn left and continue into
a small park.
Here there is a waymarked footpath that takes you to Ewe Cote Farm. This
footpath is EXTREMELY overgrown.
At Ewe Cote Farm, the continuing footpath is similarly overgrown.
Past the next farm, we gave up trying to use the footpath as it went down
a track that was invisible beneath the overgrowth. After help from a farmer
we crossed fields to a Guest House at Swallow's Nest, where the on-going
track was similarly overgrown.
At this point, we simply followed the road back to Sandsend.
