Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
A walk suitable for any time of the year. However, the full
benefit of the walk will be obtained on a fine, clear day when you can
take full advantage of the views.
Navigation is very straightforward, though you may need to keep an eye
on the footpath signs in Brotton.
There are a couple of quite steep ascents and descents, - the ascent from
Skinningrove to the cliff top in particular.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the cliff top parade near the lift in Saltburn
(NZ66533 21641). Parking is free here, and there are some fine views of
the coast.
Descend to the beach front by the steps near the lift.
Continue along the beach front to the point just past the "Ship"
Inn, where there are two paths going up the hill on your left. Ignore
the steep, stepped path ("The Cleveland Way Footpath") and take
the other path which is marked as a cycle track. Follow this path to,
first, Mill farm and then Ladgates Farm. Continue East, first along the
farm track and then the footpath, until you come to the railway line.
Cross the railway and continue along the waymarked footpath round Warsett
Hill.
Where you see a footpath that branches off this path and heads East, tae
this footpath,
Shortly before the path reaches the railway line, head for a gateway on
your right. Through this gateway is a broad track (Ing's Lane) that crosses
Brotton's golf course.
Continue into Brotton and follow INg's Lane to reach the main road through
Brotton.
Cross the road and walk along Kilton Lane to a point just near the cemetery,
where there is a footpath sign on your left.
Take this "footpath" (through housing) along Winchester Road,
until you see a footpath sign almost straight ahead that cuts through
housing.
Take this path and immediately turn right once into the field.
Continue ahead for two fields (keeping to the "obvious" footpath.
Now turn left (with the hedge on your left, and keeping the hedge on your
left aim for the footpath crossing of the busy A174 road.
Take the footpath to Craggs Hall Fram, and continue to Back Street. Now
hewad for Carlin How.
In Carlin How, cross the A174, then take the footpath that dsecends to
Skinningrove.
In Skinningrove, follow the main street to the sea front.
Here, pick up the clearly marked Cleveland Way Footpath to return along
the cliff top to Saltburn.
