Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
A route that has been well trodden, and deservedly so. The
route can be used year round.
Today, however, the route was chosen as our cars were parked at "low
level", where there wasn't too much of a problem with snow or ice
on the road, but the walk took us up to the moors above Osmotherley wehere
there was PLENTY of snow and ice.
Although we parked near the Ingleby Cross, this isn't to be recommended.
The local residents seem to regard the area in front of their houses as
their own private property, and weren't over-polite in asking us to move.
Better, maybe, to park in the lay-by in front of the nearby church. (NZ
452 003).
Another potential difficulty is in finding the footpath from the Forestry
track up to Scarth Wood Moor. Miss the correct path and you will have
a bit of a struggle up a steep slope and though dense undergrowth.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from street parking near Ingleby Cross (NZ44985 00674),
- BUT, see the note re. parking, above.
Cross the A172 Osmotherley - Stokesley main road and head up the lane
past the church and Arncliffe Hall.
When you meet the Forestry track, turn left and folloow the track until
you find the footpath on your right at NZ459 004).
Follow this footpath uphill until you emerge at Scarth Wood Moor.
Follow the Cleveland Way Eastwards, briefly, before cutting down to the
minor road that leads to Osmotherley.
Follow this road past Sheepwash to the Cod Beck Reservoir.
Take the footpath on the Northern side of the reservoir until you reach
the dam.
Cross the dam and continue along the Forestry track until you meet va
minor track that (on the map) bisects the plantation. Now head South Westwards
to the ruins of a farmhouse, and onwards to Green Lane.
Continue down Green Lane until you come to where the Cleveland Way footpath
joins it above Whitehouse Farm.
Follow the Cleveland Way footpath into Osmotherley, and continue on the
Cleveland Way to where it enters South Wood.
At this point, take the left track and follow the finger post to the Forestry
track that is marked "Coast to Coast Footpath". This returns
you to the lane above Arncliffe Hall, from where you return to the start.
