Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
The potential for this walk is terrific, with the highlight being
a gentle amble through Errington Wood.
Unfortunately, what made the walk rather difficult was the footpath
through Tockett's Mill being diverted without any warning or indication,
followed by the need to make another diversion when the Tocketts Beck
was too deep to cross on foot (the footbridge has been washed away
a long time ago).
The route out and back along Mucky Lane can be extremely wet and muddy.
However, if the weather is dry this is a walk that is well worthwhile
doing, and provides some splendid views.
Apart from the difficulties with Tocketts Mill and the Tocketts Beck
there are no other problems.

Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the long stay car park in Guisborough (NZ66541
21635).
Walk to St. Nicholas' Church and take the footpath across the fields to
the Whitby Road.
Follow the Whitby Road (fortunately there is a pavement) to the roundabout,
and cross the main A171 road.
On the left is a bridleway sign; head Northwards up Mucky Lane to the
A173.
Cross this road and continue on the track towards Tocketts House Farm.
Take the footpath to Tocketts Mill that is on your right baout 200 yards
before Tocketts House Farm.
At Tocketts Mill, cross the beck on the road bridge, then turn half-left
to find the footpath that rises up the bank through the trees.
Continue North-Eastwards on the field footpath until you reach a farm
lane. Here turn left and follow the footpath to Upleatham village.
Continue through the village to reach the track that heads Northwards.
Just before this track reaches the woodland, there is a footpath up to
Errington Wood.
Once in Errington Wood, there is a broad and easily followed track that
heads West and exits at Sandy Lane.
Here head Southwards along a clear track until you reach a gate at the
end of the lane.
Continue through the gate following the fence linbe, and after about 100
yards there is a stile on your right that leads to a clear track that
heads South.
Follow this track to the point on Raisbeck Wood where a footpath waymark
indicates a footpath down the grassy bank.
This footpath leads to the crossing of the Tocketts Beck.
IF the beck can be safely forded, then continue on the footpath to Tocketts
House Farm.
IF the beck cannot be safely forded, then continue beside the edge of
the wood until you find the footpath that returns you to Tocketts Mill.
Retrace your steps to Guisborough.
