Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)
A walk that is right on the doorstep of Teesside, starting
just a short drive away from the suburb of Nunthorpe.
The walk uses farm footpaths and the old railway trackbed at Pinchinthorpe,
and only when you cross the busy A171 and A173 roads are you reminded
that you are not totally in the countryside.
This is a walk that can be enjoyed at any time of the year. However, in
wet weather sections of the walk can be extremely muddy.
There are a couple of ascents, but nothing of any great severity.
For a Memory Map overlay of the walk described, please select the above
link.
(Overlay made with Version 5 of Memory Map)
Some new mapping software is now availabe which you may
want to try, - QUO mapping. You can download the software for free from
the link below, complete with demonstration maps. Having installed QUO,
you can import and export Memory Map overlays. Thus YOU DON'T NEED Memory
Map to use any of the overlays provided on the Grey Panthers website,
- just use QUO!!
Start from the small car park at Flatts Lane Country Park
(NZ55200 16853).
Take the footpath Southwards from the car park that leads you to a gate
onto the minor road connecting Normanby to the A171.
This minor road is quite busy, and visibility is poor, so great care is
needed.
Head South along this road for 100 - 200 yards, until you find a footpath
on the other side of the road.
Follow this footpath up a slope until you meet a broad track. Here turn
right and follow the track until it is almost at the minor road. At this
point there is a stile and gate on your left.
Cross the stile and follow the footpath until you come to the field above
MIll Farm.
Take the footpath down to the A171 and cross this (dual carriageway) road.
Continue on the signposted footpath to Low Farm.
Just past Low Farm, take the footpath to Spite Hall Farm, then continue
along the farm track to the A173.
Cross the A173 and follow the farm track uphill to Mount House Farm.
Past Mount House Farm, turn sharp left at the field wall at the top of
the slope.
Take the footpath to Bousdale Farm, then descend towards Hutton Gate.
When you meet the broad track at the bottom of this descent, immediately
turn sharp left and follow the track to the PInchinthorpe Gateway Nature
Reserve.
You will find the old railway trackbed in this area. Head West along the
trackbed until you see the sign indicating "Footpath to Eston Nab"
on your right.
Follow this footpath Northwards, crossing the A171 again by the "Cross
Keys" hotel.
Just North of Claphams Wood, take the track on your left and follow this
to return to your starting point.
