Explorer Map OL26, - North York Moors (Western Area)

A walk in one of the lesser travelled parts of the North York Moors, maybe. The area is certainly remote.
However, on a clear, fine, day there are some exceptional views and the track followed is generally quite straightforward.
At the start of the walk, the Church of St. Mary Magdalene is well worth a visit, and at the half-way point of the walk the Bonfield Ghyll makes a very pleasant picnic spot.
The track followed across Pockley Moor is an ancient Green Lane.

Start from the roadside near a prominent red telephone box and pillar box at Eastmoors (SE60922 90344).
Take the signposted footpath past St. Mary Magdalene's Church and School House to Lund Farm.
In front of Lund Farm, take the waymarked footpath to Birk Nab Farm. Initially this is a field footpath but then joins a farm track just before a beck. The beck is crossed by a somewhat unusual pipe bridge.
Continue along the farm track to Birk Nab Farm. Turn left at the farm and take the waymarked track across Pockley Moor.
Initially this is a sunken Green Lane, but after about half a mile joins the Little Roll Gate track, - another ancient Green Lane. Continue Northwards on this track for the next two miles or so until you come to the minor road.
About 200 yrads ahead, just to the left of this minor road, is the Locking Stone, - an ancient standing stone which appears to have been some sort of a route marker.
Now head South along the minor road, and continue until you come to the farm track to Bonfield Ghyll Farm on your right. This is clearly shown as being a Bridleway to Bilsdale.
Just before the farm, take the footpath to Bonfield Ghyll. Cross the Ghyll and climb up to the other side of the valley.
Join the shooters' track at the top of the slop, and turn left. Follow the track to the minor road.
At the minor road, turn right and continue until you come to the fram track that leads to Piethorn Farm.
At the farm, take the waymarked footpath to Bogmire Gill, and cross the Gill by the stepped stile and small footbridge.
Turn left, and follow the path until you come to a track that runs parallel to East Moor Wood.
Take the footpath into East Moor Wood, and when you come to the first Forestry track, turn right and follow this all the way back to East Moors.
